01.Full Stop / Period

① End a sentence

② Abbreviation(缩写)

: e.g. i.e.(id est => 即,也就是) etc.

: 美式(Mr. Mrs. Dr. AM PM)英式(Mr Mrs Dr a.m. p.m.)

02.Comma

① List

: To make this, you’ll need eggs, flour and sugar. / To make this, you’ll need eggs, flour, and sugar.

② With certain conjunctions(连接某些连接词)

: You can ask her, but I don’t think she’ll agree.

: I won’t be there till ten, so don’t wait for me.

③ Add non-essential information

: Apparently, he’s been suffering from depression for several years.

: Yakutsk, which is in northern Siberia, has the coldest winter of any city in the world.

03.Colon

: I can promise you one thing: you won’t regret your decision.

04.Semicolon

: He’s so stubborn; it’s impossible to convince him to change his idea even a little.

05.Apostrophe 撇号

① Replace a missing letter

② Show possession

: How many m’s are there in a ‘accommodation’?

06.Hyphens 连接符

① Compound adjectives

: It’s a six-hour flight to Mumbai.

: It was surprisingly tasty for a five-dollar meal.

② With some prefixes 前缀

[ex- self- non-]

: Self-driving cars may become popular one day, but for now the technology is too underdeveloped.

③ Prefix with proper nouns or numbers

: anti-European; post-1950 politics

④ Compound numbers and fraction

: tree-quarters of the population

07.Dashes # 破折号

  • En dash: word1 - word2
  • Em dash: word1—word2

: He had escaped—or so he thought.

08.Speech marks

① Quating what someone said

: he stood up and said “I wouldn’t do it if you pay me a million dollars.”

② Express irony, sarcasm or scepticism

: Paying 100 euros for ‘luxury economy’ was not a good idea!

: Many cities in the ‘special ecoomic development Zone’ are practically ghost town.

③ To refer a words as words

: ‘Millennium’ is a difficult word to spell.

09.Parentheses 括号

① Ading non-essential information to sentence

: Vladimir Mayakovaky (1893 - 1930) was one of the most famous poets of the revolution era.

② Giving your reader options

: Write your suggestion(s) here.
